Preparing for the Future

I recently returned from a much-needed, extended vacation. A portion of my trip was spent camping in the mountains with friends. They all have RV’s and go camping several times a year. I don’t have an RV – I have a tent. It’s a really, really big tent that is perfect for one person, although the paperwork says it sleeps 10 comfortably. I also haven’t camped for probably 15 years and have never, ever camped for seven nights.

As the group was getting settled and organized for the week, we heard a commotion coming from George and Emily’s RV across the road. An opportunistic squirrel managed to enter the motorhome through the screen door that was slightly ajar. When Emily entered, she found the squirrel feasting on the avocados intended for that night’s dinner. Screaming ensued by both Emily and the squirrel, fondly named Fat Freddy, as he looked for a way to escape. Freddy finally found his way out and continued to stockpile food all week for the coming winter.

I learned a lot from a squirrel. Freddy and his friends clearly sensed that change was coming and they needed to be prepared regardless of the risks and the work required. Change is coming in our world too. I can feel it as I see the signs of the end times becoming more evident each day.

Jesus gave us a great lesson in the Parable of the 10 Bridesmaids, found in Matthew 25. He admonishes us to be wise and to be prepared for the coming Marriage Feast of the Lamb. I don’t know exactly when Jesus is returning, but I plan to be prepared, no matter the risks, to meet Jesus and enter the Kingdom of Heaven.

So you too must keep watch! For you do not know the day or hour of my return.

Matthew 25:13

  1. Spot on. I posted Keith Green’s Oh Lord You’re Beautiful “ on my FB page. As I listened to the words of the verses my heart cried out. Lord help me be ready. Listen to His voice calling His Bride.  Bonnie

  2. I was just reading Revelation 21 & 22 this morning. It speaks of what’s waiting for the Bride of Christ. How wonderful it will be! I’m listening and waiting, oil lamp ready at hand! Thanks for the reminder, Deanna!

  3. I loved hearing about Fat Freddy and indeed, this is an important metaphor for the coming days. I did have to laugh because one time Larry and I were golfing in Utah and we left the golf cart with a banana in it. As we walked away, we looked back and saw a grinning squire laughing (I swear it) as he ate the banana. We ran toward the cart and he ran off. We chased after him, and he stayed just far enough away from us until we stopped. He stopped and I’m sure he was grinning at us, mocking us. We moved toward him, and he ran a few steps, just enough to stay ahead of us. He followed us to the next tee and again tried to take anything he could find to eat in our cart. I think my “Fat Freddy” should also be an example of our intentional efforts to store truth in our hearts and minds for the coming “winter.” Thank you, Deanna, for helping me to remember my “Fat Freddy.”
