Dear God, be good to me. The sea is so wide and my boat is so small.
Breton fisherman’s prayer
I love to be on the water. Sailboats and kayaks are my favorite ways to enjoy the ocean and lakes because they are quiet. Only the sound of the breeze is heard as the vessel cuts through the water. It’s so incredibly peaceful and soothes my soul.
During one sailing trip between Southern California and Catalina Island, the land disappeared in a late afternoon haze. Suddenly, I felt the vastness of the ocean and the boat felt so tiny with only water in view in every direction. An uneasiness rose up in my body and I was afraid. Familiar landmarks were no further away than they had been a short time before; I just could not see them.
Recently, life feels a bit like being adrift on the vast sea, in a haze with a boat much too small. I am overwhelmed, afraid, navigating even simple things seems difficult, and I’m not sure I can face any new storms that may appear on the horizon. The familiar landmarks that keep me oriented are hidden in the haze. I don’t feel safe.
It’s in times like this I call out to God for help because sometimes life is just too overwhelming on my own. I long to feel His presence surrounding me with the comfort of the Holy Spirit. I need God’s guidance because the ocean looks the same in every direction. We all feel this way sometimes.
God’s Word reminds us we have hope as an anchor for our soul, firm and secure. Jesus calmed the sea during a violent storm for the disciples. He will surely do the same when we call out to Him. He is our peace. So we continue our journey across the great expanse of the unknown ocean knowing He guides us and keeps us moving in the right direction.
When you pass through the waters, I will be with you; and when you pass through the rivers, they will not sweep over you. When you walk through the fire, you will not be burned; the flames will not set you ablaze. For I am the Lord your God, the Holy One of Israel, your Savior; I give Egypt for your ransom, Cush and Seba in your stead. – Isaiah 43:2-3 (NIV)

Yes! Love to sail! Right there with you!
Taking life an hour at a time helps too when I’m overwhelmed, Lord, what do You want me to do right now? Being honest with Him turns out to be the best policy….thank you D for this thoughtful writing🥰
