Soar on Wings Like Eagles

Sitting in my kayak on a scenic mountain lake, with the deep blue sky as a vivid backdrop against the deep green of the trees, I saw the most magnificent sight – an eagle, doing a dive-bomb, with talons outstretched, entering the water for the fish it had spotted from high above. Its feathers heavy with the weight of the water, the eagle rose from the lake with a large trout firmly held in its deadly grasp. The eagle barely skimmed the surface of the water as it flew in tight circles and fought to gain altitude. The effort was clear as I saw the strain in the wings of the mighty bird. For a solid three minutes, the eagle continued to rise until it was able to reach its nest at the top of a tall pine tree.

I observed other eagles soaring high in the sky on the lift provided by the rising air currents. The eagles circled within the huge columns of rising air until they glided out of the thermals to move across the landscape.

Life is difficult and I get tired and weary. I’m not strong enough to handle everything on my own. God has provided a wonderful lesson in the behavior of the eagle. I want to soar like the eagle, rising on the currents of faith in my heavenly Father. The high places will be my home, where I can remove myself from the earthly pressures that drag me down.

Do you not know? Have you not heard? The Lord is the everlasting God, the Creator of the ends of the earth. He will not grow tired or weary, and his understanding no one can fathom. He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the Lord will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint (Isaiah 40:28-31).

  2. Oh, I can so picture the scene through your description, Deanna. I liked you mentioning about his feathers “heavy with the weight of water.” Oh, isn’t that how we feel when life weighs us down? Yet, just like God made the eagles’ wings capable of overcoming the weight of the water, we also trust He will strengthen us to rise even while weighted down. Thank you for this encouragement.
