Music is What Feelings Sound Like

Anyone who knows me understands I have always loved music. Music is the fabric of my earliest memories. As a singer, songwriter, musician, and worship leader I love the nuances and dynamics of music. A good song, particularly a Christian song, is like having a conversation with God.

Sometimes it’s like the insistent crashing of waves against the shore, the sound rising in a crescendo as I pour out my love to the God of the universe. He responds by filling my heart and entire being with unabated joy and praise.

Often the music is so soft I can almost hear the voice of God whispering in my ear because he knows I listen better when he speaks softly and intimately to me. When my internal world is very loud, God quietly speaks peace to me bringing encouragement and assurance to my heart.

At times the tempo of the song speeds up as I rush with great anticipation toward something exciting He wants to show me or teach me. Other times the tempo slows down to remind me my life is not a race, it’s a journey.

Music alone can bring hope, healing, and heartfelt praise; however, I find that when I express the meaning of the lyrics as I sing a song, the dynamics come naturally with the ebb and flow of a good conversation.

Music … what a great way to have a conversation with God!

Psalm 150 (NLT)
Praise the Lord! Praise God in his sanctuary; praise him in his mighty heaven!
Praise him for his mighty works; praise his unequaled greatness!
Praise him with a blast of the ram’s horn; praise him with the lyre and harp!
Praise him with the tambourine and dancing; praise him with strings and flutes!
Praise him with a clash of cymbals; praise him with loud clanging cymbals.
Let everything that breathes sing praises to the Lord! Praise the Lord!

  1. This was beautifully written. Thank you. It’s also precisely why I never understood how, in the movie Footloose, why they were so against music and dancing, even going as far as to say it was a sin to like or participate in either when it is right there in the bible, that Jesus enjoys both! Thank you again for sharing. Have a blessed day and may it be filled with music.
