Breathe on Me While I Sleep Lord

I remember as a child being tucked into bed and feeling that all was well with the world because someone was there to make sure I was safe and loved. The reminder to “sleep tight and don’t let the bed bugs bite” undoubtedly ensured that whatever hurts or pains I had would be better in the morning.

I must admit, I miss those days. As I grew older the hurts and pains seemed to increase in intensity and being “tucked in” was no longer an option. Just because we grow up doesn’t mean we outgrow the need to feel safe and loved. Recently I saw this phrase, “Breathe on me while I sleep tonight Lord! That I may wake up healed, blessed and empowered.” If there is an adult version of being tucked in, that little prayer might be it.

Life is filled with uncertainty and rarely turns out the way we plan. Several years ago, in the midst of a struggle I was facing, one of my cousins, who had gone through a very tough time, shared the song “Sing Me a Lullaby” by Twila Paris with me. The words touched me deeply … I don’t think I could have expressed the feelings I had any more clearly than the song does.

Sing Me a Lullaby
Twila Paris
All I see is that I don’t see what’s ahead of me
I’m afraid my life will never be all I hope for in the end.
All I know is that I don’t know where the road will go
If I dream, then will I find it so – will tomorrow be my friend?
Sing me a lullaby, sing me to sleep tonight.
Sing me a tender lullaby cause all my heart can do is cry.
Help me compose my soul, quietly take control
Sing me a lullaby and tell me I’m your child.
All my plans are falling through, and I don’t understand – yes
I know, my world is in your hand, but won’t you tell me once again?
Sing me a lullaby, sing me to sleep tonight.
Sing me a tender lullaby, cause all my heart can do is cry.
Help me compose my soul, quietly take control
Sing me a lullaby and tell me I’m your child.

God has put a longing to be safe and loved into our innermost being. We clearly never outgrow it and Jesus reminds us that He’s the only one who can truly meet that need.

Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. – Matthew 11:29 (NLT)
