It was the final session of a women’s conference. The worship band and I were playing a familiar song and the ladies were singing at the top of their voices with hearts full of praise and hands waving in the air. We were just reaching the most powerful part of the song when disaster hit … my guitar pick had split and broken. This may not sound like much of a problem but it changes the sound of the instrument, the broken pick can easily become caught in the strings of the guitar, and the worship leader has the opportunity to fight off a mini nervous breakdown. The band noticed that something wasn’t quite right with the sound of my guitar and automatically filled in the gaps. As I searched for a new guitar pick at the end of the song, I took a moment to explain to the audience what was happening. I held up the broken pick where I could clearly see it in the bright lights. It no longer looked like a guitar pick; it looked like a broken heart! Out of that little broken piece of plastic God revealed something important to me … even with a broken pick or a broken heart I can still make music. The past few weeks have been difficult as I’ve remembered and dealt with old wounds that resulted in a broken heart and shattered life. I have also been reminded of who God is and his character.
- God knows when my heart and spirit are broken.
- The Lord is close to the brokenhearted; he rescues those whose spirits are crushed. (Ps 34:18 NLT)
- God heals my broken heart.
- He heals the brokenhearted and bandages their wounds. (Ps 147:3 NLT)
- God gives me strength.
- My health may fail, and my spirit may grow weak, but God remains the strength of my heart; he is mine forever. (Ps 73:26 NLT)
- God gives me peace.
- I am leaving you with a gift—peace of mind and heart. And the peace I give is a gift the world cannot give. So don’t be troubled or afraid. (John 14:27 NLT)
- God helps me.
- So we can say with confidence, “The Lord is my helper, so I will have no fear. What can mere people do to me?” (Hebrews 13:6 NLT)
- God is my savior.
- He will wipe every tear from their eyes, and there will be no more death or sorrow or crying or pain. All these things are gone forever.” (Revelation 21:4 NLT)
- God gives me rest.
- Then Jesus said, “Come to me, all of you who are weary and carry heavy burdens, and I will give you rest. (Matthew 11:28 NLT)
- God is stubbornly faithful.
- Do not be afraid or discouraged, for the Lord will personally go ahead of you. He will be with you; he will neither fail you nor abandon you.” (Deuteronomy 31:8 NLT)
- God is my comforter.
- If you love me, obey me; and I will ask the Father and he will give you another Comforter, and he will never leave you. (John 14:16 TLB)
- God is truth.
- And now, dear brothers and sisters, one final thing. Fix your thoughts on what is true, and honorable, and right, and pure, and lovely, and admirable. Think about things that are excellent and worthy of praise. (Philippians 4:8 NLT)
Much like the broken guitar pick the music continues in my life despite my brokenness. I may not sound the same, I may get stuck in the strings of life, I may need people to help me fill in the gaps, but this I know … God is faithful and one day I will be fully restored.
