Come to Your Senses

Every now and then, when I was a kid, I would hear the phrase, “You need to come to your senses!” Generally, that meant I had stepped outside the bounds of what was acceptable in my family. I knew immediately that whatever I had done or said was definitely the wrong thing. That phrase was an invitation to re-evaluate how I was doing things and to use good judgment.

I’ve been pondering the deeper meaning of “come to your senses.” The five basic human senses are touch, sight, hearing, smell, and taste. I look to the example of Jesus and how He used His senses to touch those around Him with compassion and healing. He used His eyes to see needs of the people He encountered and then listened intently to hear their concerns and questions. Jesus dined with people and enjoyed the hearty aroma of a good meal as well as the sweet smell of perfume as Mary, the sister of Lazarus, anointed His feet. Finally, Jesus tasted death when He gave up His life so we could live. He used all of HIs senses.

I want to love God with every fiber of my being and love the people around me like Jesus did. I want to come to His senses.

Jesus replied, “You must love the Lord your God with all your heart, all your soul, and all your mind,” This is the first and greatest commandment. A second is equally important: “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Matthew 22:37-38
