Unwavering Hope

Unwavering hope. A simple phrase to describe my belief in a powerful Biblical truth – God can be trusted to keep His promises!

Since “unwavering” is not a word I use in my daily vocabulary, I checked my thesaurus to gain a bit more insight. The thesaurus suggests the synonyms “determined” and “unshakable” as clarifications. I love the vitality of those words. I am determined. I am unshakable.

God makes many promises in the Bible. Here are four of the promises I hold close to my heart.

  1. God is my strength. – I freely admit that weariness and defeat sometimes define my day. Memories of my own failures and betrayals by those I trusted drain my energy and my desire to continue. God faithfully reminds me in Isaiah 40 of His promise to give power to the weak and strength to the powerless for those who trust in Him.
  2. God will guide. – I’m not convinced that submission is something any of us are particularly good at. It seems to counter my “can do” attitude. My upbringing demanded that I be self-sufficient and not depend on others. There’s a lot of stress and pressure in trying to control where I go and what I do in all aspects of life. I’m thankful for God’s promise in Proverbs 3 to lead me to the right path when I submit to and trust God’s way.
  3. God forgives me. – Every single day I fail in some way. Sometimes I commit an unintentional sin but sometimes I walk into a sinful situation with my eyes wide open. Either way, I am in need of forgiveness from my heavenly Father. It’s not always easy to confess my failures to Him, even though I know He knows all about them. I’m grateful I can come to God and confess my sins. The blood shed by Jesus breaks down the wall of sin. God hears me and is faithful and just to forgive me as the Bible says in 1st John.
  4. God is my Comforter. – Life has presented me with some tough challenges. My heart and spirit have been crushed in ways I never expected. The pain is often beyond the comprehension of even those closest to me. During those times, God reminds me that He sent the Holy Spirit to bring comfort to me. I love the passage in John 14 where Jesus assures His followers of this fact.

These promises, and many more, contribute to the determination and unshakable confidence I have in God. As I hold tightly to Him, without wavering, I know I can trust Him.

Let us hold tightly without wavering to the hope we affirm, for God can be trusted to keep his promise.
