Prayer to the Soul

I love the writings of the late Christian author and speaker, Corrie Ten Boom. Her simple words and phrases contain practical wisdom that dives deep into the recesses of my heart. Here is one of my favorites: “What wings are to a bird and sails to a ship, so is prayer to the soul.”

During my first sailing lesson, many years ago, I was taught to watch birds to help me navigate. I learned birds soar when they fly into the wind. Even though birds encounter resistance, it is the rush of wind lifting their wings that allows them to gain great height.

I also learned it is not possible to sail directly into the wind, however, I could use the wind to zig-zag my way toward my destination. This required constant attention to simultaneously change the boat’s course and switch the front sail from one side to another. It was exhilarating to feel the wind and mist sting my cheeks as I made steady progress toward my goal. Sailing into the wind takes work but it is invigorating.

I find these principles apply to my life as well. Instead of constantly being pushed downwind by circumstances, I can turn around, face the resistance, and soar like the birds. As in sailing, I adjust my sails and turn in response to changes in my life’s direction. It’s hard work, but God is with me, leading and directing my way. Prayer lifts my spirit and allows me to soar as I meet the challenges set before me. I am refreshed and exhilarated by the gentle hand of the Holy Spirit.

Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s will for you in Christ Jesus.

  1. As always, your insights are inspirational, motivational, and empowering. Love the idea of facing the “danger”/wind and persevering. How true that is for our sanctification. I prayed for you today! Thanks for continuing to pray for me.
